1. NEWS BITES
Mold has been found in some bags of Wysong dry extruded dog foods manufactured in June, July and August of 2009. No problems have been found or reported in any other Wysong food product including cat foods. For details on the recall visit Wysong.net.
2. See Jackson on Animal Planet’s new season of Cats 101! As a resident behavior expert, he’ll discuss the distinctive traits of your favorite cat breeds. Cats 101 airs on Animal Planet starting Saturday, November 7th. Check your local listings for times in your area. Set that DVR and don’t miss a minute!
In honor of this occasion, this weekend only we’ll be offering a 10% discount on any order of Spirit Essences by entering the code CATS101. If anyone signs up for a consult here: jacksongalaxy.com and mentions CATS 101 in their intake form, you’ll receive 10% off that service!
3. Declaw bans passed in 3 California cities! Dr. Jean and Jackson have been helping Dr. Jennifer Conrad and the Paw Project with their efforts to get ordinances against cat declawing and tendonectomy passed before the January 1, 2010 deadline. This arbitrary date was instituted when the California Vet Med Association pushed through a state law prohibiting cities from banning any “legal” medical procedure–regardless of cruelty or lack of medical justification. That lit the fire under cities who do not like the state telling them what they can and cannot do.
So far, ordinances banning cat declawing/tendonectomy have been passed in San Francisco, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills. The vote in Los Angeles is tomorrow (Friday November 6) and it will be a nail-biter! On Tuesday, we take the action to Berkeley.
ANY READER WHO LIVES OR WORKS IN LOS ANGELES, PLEASE CALL YOUR COUNCILPERSON ASAP AND ASK THEM TO SUPPORT THE DECLAW BAN! Contact information for lawmakers in Los Angeles can be found on this page. It would also be wonderful to write thank you’s to the 3 cities that have passed the ban so far; contact info for them are also listed. Malibu is the only city to fail on this measure, due to a massive, well-funded misinformation campaign that overwhelmed our resources.
If you are in the Bay Area and want to write to the Berkeley councilmembers, information can also be found on that same page.
THANKS TO OUR READERS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GOOD THOUGHTS–THEY ARE MUCH APPRECIATED!
In recognition of National Pet Diabetes Month, we’ve updated our article on Feline Diabetes in the Little Big Cat Bookstore. There are several interesting additions and new developments.
